THE FOGGING MARKET IN KENYA FOR FULL AERIAL AND
SURFACE DISINFECTION – 26 June 2020
This is the release of dense sub-micron aerosols that
deliver gas-like performances that offers a three-dimensional coverage and
treatment in large areas, multiple connected spaces, complex geometries, long
horizontal and vertical runs, and the various surfaces within these spaces,
including any equipment or objects located therein. The result is a complete
coverage and treatment of all exposed surfaces within the treated space(s).
Which is a process of gaseous sterilization which is used for killing of
micro-organisms and prevention of microbial growth in air, surface of wall or
floor. This uses chemicals such as:Formaldehyde, phosphine, 1,3-dichloropropene,
chloropicrin, methyl isocyanate, hydrogen cyanide, sulfuryl fluoride, Iodoform.
Some of these chemicals such as formaldehyde have been determined to be
carcinogenic. Others cause respiratory irritation, itchy eyes, runny or stuffy
nose, sore throat and headache, among others.
In order for fumigation to be effective, the gas has to
dissolve in the film of moisture surrounding the bacteria, for this reason
relative humidity in the order of 75% RH and temperature above 22°C.
Neutralization After the initiation of formaldehyde vapor immediately leave the
room and seal it for at least 48 hours .Neutralize residual formalin gas with
Ammonia by exposing 250ml of Ammonia per liter of Formaldehyde used. Place the
Ammonia solution in the center of the room and leave it for 3 hours to
neutralize formalin vapor.
As for fogging, the equipment supersaturates the atmosphere
with a disinfectant fog; the area covered will vary depending on the
application system being used. A built-in system will typically be used for
production areas >200m3, with mobile units usually being employed for
areasusually being employed for areas< 200m3. Fogging is carried out for a
minimum of 15 to 30 minutes and an additional period of 45 to 60 minutes to
allow the droplets settle out of the air and onto the surfaces. After this, the
room or space can be used immediately.
In Kenya, fogging is still a new concept and has yet to be
fully embraced. This allows for an exponential room of growth especially due to
the current corona virus pandemic that requires meticulous and thorough aerial
and surface disinfection to reduce the transmission cases.
Currently in Kenya, 2 companies are offering fogging.
Anios (surfasafe premiumat 1800 kshs for 1 liter and
surfanios at 5400 kshs for 5 liters) under Surgipharm and Crown Healthcare, and
Sirmaxo (Sanihigene at 5400 kshs for 5 liters) under Harley’s pharmaceuticals.
Even so, the focus by these two companies has been in private institutions and
is determined by the availability of the fogger solution which they in turn
provide. In case of an out of stock (OS) situation, the clients are left to
their own devices.
Quaternary Ammonium compound is the most common fogger in
the Kenyan market. Others that can also be used are Silver hydrogen peroxide
andPotassium peroxomono sulphate.
As such, with a machine available, one can cater to a range
of clients from hospitals, to food service industry, and even public spaces.
There are various fogging machines:
Yantra 05 USD 1100 Aerojet
Rotofog turntable USD 400 Satej
USD 3000, +01 3500, +plus 4200
There is a ready market for fogging currently available in
Kenya. This opportunity has been made more possible by the current corona virus
pandemic that requires fast and effective solutions to curb the spread of the
virus in both hospitals and public spaces. Fogging is a lot faster, cheaper,
and more effective than fumigation with little to no downside. The hiring
charges alone will yield great returns before the machine requires its first
Pairing the fogging machine with the fogger will increase profitability
As such, investing in a fogging machine, and the fogger
solution if possible, will open up a readily accepting market and prove
profitable as an investment.
